Project scope
The purpose of this project is to improve and preserve the pavement structure which includes repairing pavement failures, to improve signalized intersections, and repair & improve pedestrian facilities. This work will lower maintenance costs.
Project description
The project will rehabilitate the pavement on 2 miles San Tomas Expressway by placing a new 2-inch asphalt concrete overlay, performing Cold-In-Place Recycling and spot pavement repairs, and removing & installing localized curb, gutter, and drainage improvements. It also includes upgrading of existing pedestrian ramps to comply with American with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards, new sidewalk installation & repair, installing new striping and markings, installing new roadside signs, pedestrian sensors, pedestrians touchless push buttons, relocation of electrical cabinets, and improving signal facilities. Extended 2 corners at San Tomas Expressway/Cabrillo Ave for traffic calming and removing the free running right turn resulting in a square geometry at the intersection.

- Construction Schedule: Begin October 21, 2024 to end of June 2025 (weather permitting)
Current Status: January 20, 2025 to February 7, 2025
Construction work will begin on Monday, January 20, 2025. The contractor is scheduled to install construction area signs, message boards, installing drain inlet protection devices, exploration works such as potholing and utility location work, sawcutting work, demolition work, clearing and grubbing, begin installation of pedestrian facilities, installation of temporary video detection cameras and other electrical works such as installation of temporary signals, conduits.
As a result, there will be random lane closures from El Camino Real to US-101 in both directions and expect delays between 9am to 3pm for the duration of the dates mentioned above excluding weekends. No lane closures proposed till mid-January 2025.
Funding source
The Project is funded by the 2016 Measure B Local Streets and roads program and vehicle registration fees.
